your teens will soon get a driver's license at 17 in New Jersey. It just happened to me this week and there are a few things that I wanted to share.
One of the amazing points of interest to me happened immediately after leaving the DMV with my son, license in hand. As you leave, there is no rule book, no list of regulations or laws, no tips or guides for the parents. Given that all teens must first have a permit and pass the written test, this information is all in their heads and not given to the parents. So for the first time in my life, I am relying on my teenage son to recall all of those rules and to abide by them appropriately. It is really and truly his responsibility now ( ). There is also a very handy "Guide to Safe Driving "on the website that I found to be very helpful for parents. Moving along, I referred to a colleague and friend who shared some helpful hints with me after raising three teenage drivers herself (Ann Rassmussen, PsyD, her notes are attached). It became helpful to me to reach out and consult other parents of young drivers to casually guide me through this stressful process indeed. We begin to navigate through this process with patience, clarity, support, worry, fear and joy all at the same time. Rather, I was trying to share in all of the glory and joy of a young teenager's dream come true–It is time to escape from my parents!! So with his new, polarized, Ray Ban sunglasses in hand and full throttle blasting loud music galore, my son launched onto the streets of New Jersey and I held on for dear life! I was trying not to lean to the right too much, or to shout out commands and criticisms or to have a nervous breakdown on our first day trip together. We have now begun to enjoy the journey together and I wanted to highlight some tips and points of advice that I will use in these early months on the road together.
